Alicante, home of the Volvo Ocean Race

julio 7, 2017 By news Comments Off

If you love sailing and water sports in general, Alicante is your destination next October. The city repeats for the fourth consecutive time as the home of the Volvo Ocean Race, the longest and most important race in the world. On 22 October the competition will start from the city, but from long before the capital of the Costa Blanca will live the special atmosphere of the Volvo. In the weeks prior to the start of the competition, the city is focused on receiving the thousands of fans and tourists arriving in Alicante.

The Race Village opens on October 11, with all the teams already settled and with doors open to the fans. Take the opportunity to see the emblematic Volvo Ocean 65, buy your Volvo souvenir and enjoy the gastronomy of Alicante. There, in the harbour area, you can also visit the Museum of the Volvo Ocean Race. You can not miss it if you want to know the history of the competition and the values of this very special sport. It is a modern, interactive museum, and you will love it!

Both the Race Village and the Volvo Museum are located very close to your accommodation in Be Alicante. It will only take you about 10 minutes by walk! Cross the Town Hall square and you will be in the Esplanade and the Port.

In addition, this year each team will install a mobile base in the Race Village, open to anyone who wants to visit. You will be able to know the daily life of each team from within: how they prepare the race, how they live and their history.

The longest regatta in the world

This Volvo 2017-2018 edition promises to be the most disputed of recent years. The eight participating teams will have to travel 45,000 nautical miles, about 83,000 kilometers, during the race. They will cross four oceans, and more than 12,000 miles will be disputed in one of the planet’s hardest ecosystems: the Antarctic. An epic fight at sea!

From Alicante, the regatta will pass through 11 other host cities: Cape Town (South Africa), Melbourne (Australia), Hong Kong, Guangzhou (China), Auckland (New Zealand), Itajaí (Brazil), Newport (Sweden), The Hague (Holland), and Lisbon (Portugal), where the competition will end in June 2018.

This year marks a new for the competition: all teams will have to use the same prototype boat, the Volvo Ocean 65. Moreover, the number of crew has been reduced from eight to seven sailors. There is a lot of female presence in this edition. In fact,  the team ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’ will have a woman as a skipper, the British sailor Dee Caffari.

Take advantage of the Volvo Ocean Race to get to know Alicante, a city devoted to the sea and who loves water sports like no other. Reserve your accommodation in Be Alicante and get ready to live one of the biggest shows in the world. The Volvo is here!
