Bonfires of Saint John (Hogueras de San Juan Alicante)

Already smells like gunpowder, in a few days Alicante will celebrate the famous Hogueras de San Juan. This festival is declared of International Tourist Interest and this year marks its 90th anniversary.

 

From June 14th to 20th is when the artistic monuments are planted on the street, commonly called “Hoguras”, these monuments are made of cardboard, wood, cork and paint. The “Ninots” are the key pieces of the bonfires, since many of them use humor and satire to criticize day-to-day events. In recent years these dolls have criticized much political and social problems that have lived in the panorama of Spain.

From June 20th to 24th, the real party is lived on the street, with mascletás, parades, horseback riding and barracas. The night of June 24 is “La Nit del Foc” (Night of fire) the announcement to start burning each bonfire of the current 90 districts comes through a spectacular fireworks palm that is launched from the top of Santa Barbara Castle. The Bonfires of Saint John also have their traditional dishes such as coca amb tonyina (onion coke and tuna) and bacores (figs), also during these nights you can enjoy the “Soparet Alacantí”made with tender garlic, ñoras, fried eggs and sardines in salting.

 

In addition to the city of Alicante, the Hogueras de San Juan are also held in Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura, Jávea, Dénia, Benidorm and San Juan de Alicante.
