The Central Market of Alicante
The Central Market of Alicante located in the Avenue of Alfonso X El Sabio is another mandatory stop for all those who visit Alicante. It is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
It is a Valencian Modernist style building designed by the architects Francisco Fajardo Guardiola and Juan Vidal Ramos built between 1915 and 1922.
On May 25, 1938, in the middle of the civil war, the central market was bombarded by Italian fascist troops, the number of actual victims is unknown but they were approximately 300. From that day there is a clock that was stopped at the time of the bombing, a balance and weight and the siren that warned of air attacks, these objects are exposed just at the entrance of the fish area.
On May 25 of this year 2018, the 80th anniversary of this event has been commemorated by placing a plaque in memory of the victims.
