The Way of St. James from Alicante
Departure of the Way of St. James from Alicante
The Camino de Santiago from Alicante departs from the Basilica of Santa Maria in the city. It is located very close to your accommodations in Be Alicante, so you will not find a better location to start the Camino del Sureste. Although the itinerary can be started from anywhere in the province (Alicante, Elche, Alcoy, Ibi, Orihuela, Benidorm, Elda or Villena), it is tradition to do so from the Basilica of Santa Maria.
Today, the Association of Friends of the Camino de Santiago in Alicante is trying to recover the old itinerary of the pilgrims, which continued from Villa Vieja Street to Plaza de Santa Faz, Calle Mayor and Elche Gate. Then continued along San Francisco Street, Maissonave Avenue, Aguilera Street and Orihuela Avenue, and headed to Plaza de la Luna and the Vial de los Cipreses.
There are many roads leading to Santiago from all over Europe: the Silver Route, the Camiño do Norte, the Camino del Interior, the French Way, the Cervantine routes that cross La Mancha, the Portuguese roads, the amazing English Way, and many others that cross much of the continent to Spain.
