Santa Barbara´s Castle, Alicante
If you pass through Alicante, one of the obligatory visits to its tourist monuments is undoubtedly the climb to the Castle of Santa Barbara.
At 166 meters and on the summit of Mount Benacantil is this wonderful fortress of Santa Barbara, acquires its name as it was snatched from the Arabs on the same day of the feast of Santa Barbara, December 4, 1248 by King Alfonso X The Wise.
Later during the War of Succession the castle was brutally bombarded by the French squadron, since the English troops were entrenched, the result of this battle was the construction of a tunnel, which they filled with an excessive load of dynamite that flew by the air a great part of the wall and still today the traces of the gunpowder that made the fort, which was considered in ruins and abandoned until 1963.
