If you visit the capital of the Costa Blanca this summer, you can not miss a tour of the singular buildings in Alicante.   • Mayor house

A few streets from your accommodation in Be Alicante, you will find the building of the city council. It is a baroque-style palace built in the 18th century, from 1,699 to 1,780, when the works were completed. It is a very unique building due to its peculiar construction, with towers at the ends and a facade full of balconies. Inside, you can not miss the Blue Room, the Royal Chamber of Isabel II in 1885.

A very curious fact: in the pillar where the railing of the stairs starts, there is the so-called “cota zero”, the reference point from which the height above sea level of all points in Spain is measured. The perfect place for your selfie!
  • La Asegurada House
Just in front of Be Alicante, in the Plaza de Santa María, you can see another singular biulding, La Asegurada House, dating from 1685. It is a construction that for three centuries has been used as a flour store, School, notary file and school of commerce. Today it is part of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACA). It is the oldest civil building in Alicante.
  • Santa Bárbara Castle
The Muslim geographer Al-Idrisi called the mountain where the Castle of Santa Barbara is located “Banu-lQatil”, in the 12th century. The Castle dates from the 9th century, but remains of the Bronze Age have been found on the slopes of Mount Benacantil. It is one of the symbols of the city, and you can not miss it! From its highest tower, you will have a unique view of Alicante and its entire bay. In addition, in summer the Castle offers a very interesting cultural program, with concerts of live music, exhibitions – these months you can see a sample on ‘Game of Thrones’ -, and guided tours.
  • Saint Mary Basílica
It is the oldest church in Alicante. It was built between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries on the remains of the old mosque of the city. It has a Gothic style and houses some of the works of art of great value from the 15th century. From your accommodation in Be Alicante you will have the privilege to contemplate this wonderful building, since we are located right in the Plaza de Santa María, where the basilica is situated.   • The church-cathedral of San Nicolás
With a renaissance style, it is one of the most important religious buildings in Alicante. It was built on the remains of an ancient mosque between 1616 and 1662, although the cloister dates back to the 15th century. It is located in the historical center of the city, very close to your accommodation. In its interior, it is highly recommended to visit the chapel of the Communion, considered one of the most beautiful samples of the high Spanish Baroque art. One of the must-see visits in Alicante.
  • Convent of San Agustín
Also in the historic center you can see another of the singular buildings in Alicante. Also known as the ‘Convent of the Blood Nuns’, it is a modern contemporary style bulding, which began to be built around the year 1700, And it was never finished! It is open to the public in the afternoons, and we recommend you to add this visit to your route through the historic buildings of the city.
  • Palace of the Provincial Council
With a neoclassical style, it is one of the most modern buildings in Alicante. It was built in 1928 and you will find it on Avenida de la Diputación, very close to the train station. It is one of the emblems of the city and one of the most beautiful places to visit.
  • Central Market
It is a point of reference for all the people in Alicante and one of the most beloved buildings in the city. It was built in 1912, on the antic wall of the XVIII century that surrounded Alicante. It has a style of modernist inspiration, and its façade has a grand staircase, which is one of the favorite places of tourists to take their photos. The market continues to have commercial activity every day, and is also a perfect area to go out for tapas when you come to the city. It is located on Avenida Alfonso el Sabio.
  • Gravina Palace
Headquarters of the Gravina Fine Arts Museum, this building is one of the largest palace-houses in the city. It was built in the eighteenth century on the remains of several buildings demolished during the War, and for a long time was the home of the Count of Lumiares. Today, it houses one of the most important museums in Alicante, with more than 3,000 artworks. It is located on Gravina Street, very close to Be Alicante!
  • Carbonell House
If you go down to the Paseo de la Explanada, next to the port of Alicante and in front of the Plaza del Mar, you will find one of the most emblematic buildings of the city: the Carbonell house. It was built between 1922 and 1925 and currently houses private homes and business premises. This building catches the attention of all visitors for its style and its majesty. It can be seen practically from all the promenade in the port and from the Postiguet beach.
