Alicante has a cultural and architectural heritage of the first level. In addition to the imposing Castle of Santa Barbara, its museums and historic avenues, the capital of the Costa Blanca hosts a wide variety of religious buildings of great beauty and have a wonderful history to tell. This is the definitive guide to the best churches in Alicante. Do not forget to visit any, because you will fall in love with the different architectural styles and design.
  • Basilica of Santa María
Right next to the Be Alicante headquarters – at Hostal La Milagrosa- you will find one of the best churches in Alicante, the oldest in the city, and one of the best preserved. The Basilica of Santa Maria was built between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries on the remains of the old mosque, which was built during the Muslim period. The building is Gothic in style, with a baroque façade that was built in the 15th century, when a fire almost destroyed the church. Inside it has artistic details that do not go unnoticed, such as the golden altar in rococo style (13th century) and the baptismal font, which is white marble and is attributed to the school of the genius Michelangelo. In addition, the basilica houses a beautiful Gothic image in stone representing Santa Maria. The Basilica is located in the Plaza de Santa María, and can be visited from Monday to Sunday, from 10 am to 1 pm, and from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.
  • Monastery Santa Faz
To visit the Monastery of Santa Faz it is necessary to take the bus, as it is not located at city center. But it is worth it. It is the most famous religious building in Alicante, and each year hosts one of the most massive pilgrimages of the country, which begins in the central Concathedral of San Nicolás. The Monastery has a baroque style and in it is stored a relic that arrived in the city in the 15th century from the Vatican. According to popular tradition, it is the canvas with the Veronica dried the bloodied face of Jesus on the way to Calvary.
And a curious fact: inside the temple are buried the composer Óscar Esplá and the brilliant artist Eusebio Sempere. The Monastery of Santa Faz can be visited every day of the week, from 9 am to 1 pm, and from 5 pm to 8 pm, except on Sunday afternoons, which is closed. In the center of Alicante, just a few minutes from your beacons in Be Alicante, you can take the bus that will take you to the temple (lines 23, 38 and 23N).
  • San Roque’s Chapel
To the south of the Ereta Park, at the foot of the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, you will find another of the best churches in Alicante and a smaller one, but with more charm of Alicante: San Roque hermitage. It dates from 1559, when its construction was ordered in the middle of a severe outbreak of plague that ravaged the city. It was rebuilt in 1869 with a basilical plant and polygonal apse, although in the interior still the remains of the original church of the XVI are conserved. On its main altar, the “Christ of the Gypsies”, a work of great beauty, stands out. It is located on Calle San Roque, 15.
  • Covent of ‘Monjas de la Sangre’
In the historic center of Alicante, in the neighborhood of Villa Vieja, you will find the convent of the Monjas de la Sangre, another of the most historical buildings in the city. It began to be built in the seventeenth century, and houses one of the most beautiful religious images that can be seen: La Marinera. It is the oldest figure of those who participate in Alicante Holy Week, and dates from the sixteenth century. Although the convent is unfinished, you can visit the chapel every day of the week, at 6 pm, when it opens for prayer.
