Palm Groove of Elche and El Palmeral Park in Alicante

If you like to enjoy the natural landscapes in your travels, when you come to Alicante you can not miss El Palmeral Park in the city and the world famous Palm Groves of Elche (El Palmeral). They are two very special enclaves in which you will discover another face of this beautiful region that you did not know.

Less than 30 kilometers from Alicante you will the city of Elche, the second largest and most populous in the province. There, one of the most important natural areas of Europe is located: El Palmeral de Elche (Plam Grove). It is a natural space in the heart of the city made up of more than 200,000 palm trees. An authentic oasis of nature that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 2000.  Elche may not be understood, neither its history nor its culture, without the Palm Grove.

Its origins go back to the Muslim period (8th and 9th centuries), when the Arabs installed in the city created an extensive irrigation system and an extensive field of palm trees around it. This irrigation scheme is mostly preserved today. Two great gardens are also preserved inside El Palmeral de Elche: Huerto del Cura and Huerto del Chocolatero. More recent is the beautiful municipal park, perfect to spend a wonderful day with children.

El Palmeral de Elche is a must when traveling to Alicante. From the capital of the Costa Blanca, you can get to Elche by bus (from the central station), by train (from the Renfe station) and by private car (by motorway you can get there in less than 30 minutes).

In Alicante we also have our small oasis of palm trees, which pays tribute to our sister city. El Palmeral Park is located right in front of the sea, at the southern exit. It has spectacular views. It is one of the most beautiful parks in the capital. Large waterfalls that run along paths surrounded by palm trees, where you can take a ride on a boat with oars.

There is also an area for board games, a sports court and play areas for children. It is a fantastic place to spend the afternoon, enjoy the sound of the sea in the background and also the views.

From the city center, you can easily reach El Palmeral Park and a short time with bus line 01 (San Gabriel – Juan XXIII 1st Sector). It is open from September to June, from Monday to Friday in the mornings (from 8:30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.) and on weekends and holidays from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. In summer, it opens every day from 4pm to 10pm.
