Fiesta de las Cruces de Mayo de Alicante

Fiesta de las Cruces de Mayo de Alicante

Spring is one of the most beautiful times of the year in Alicante. We have an average temperature of 25 degrees, the sun brightens every day and the beaches begin to receive tourist from all around the world. Very close to the headquarters of Be Alicante in Villavieja street they celebrate one of the most unique and beautiful festivities you can see in spring: the May Crosses Festivity (Fiesta de las Cruces de Mayo).

For four days, the Santa Cruz neighborhood, one of the oldest and most picturesque of the capital of the Costa Blanca, is full of flowers, music and joy. This zone is located at the foothills of Santa Bárbara Castle, just a few minutes walk from La Milagrosa Bed & Breakfast and Be Alicante apartments.

This year, the May Crosses celebration takes place from April 28 to May 1, and if you are in those days in the city, we recommend you to not miss it. During these four festive days, the residents of the neighborhood fill the streets of Santa Cruz with flowers, ornaments and spring decoration. All the balconies of the houses, which in themselves are very beautiful and keep their old structure, are adorned with floral elements of all colors.

The crosses are the main protagonists of this festivity: of all sizes, with flowers of all types and located in all corners of the neighborhood. They are handcrafted by the neighbors themselves and each year the most spectacular cross receives a prize.

Along with the ornate crosses, the Fiesta de las Cruces de Mayo also includes a costume contest in which all children can participate, parades, popular lunches and traditional games for the little ones.

We recommend you to walk through the streets of the neighborhood during these holidays, specially in the evening. It is a visual spectacle. Climbing the stairs of Santa Cruz that lead to the Castle surrounded by flowers, in a festive atmosphere and with the hospitality that characterizes the neighbors of this tourist district of Alicante, is a wonderful experience.

Day 1 of May is a holiday throughout Spain, so if you plan to make a break on this bridge of Labor Day, Alicante is your best choice.
