Hogueras de San Juan: what to see, where and when

Alicante is already preparing to live its biggest festivity: the Hogueras de San Juan (Bonfires of Saint John). The celebrations take place from the 20th to the 24th of June. But, altough these are the central days of the festivity, since June 2, the city is already full of acts and activities.

If you have never seen this celebration, you can not miss the opportunity to visit this year the capital of the Costa Blanca and become enfolded by the atmosphere in the city. The stone carton monuments, called ‘fogueres’ or ‘hogueras’, fill every corner of the city, from the center to the neighborhoods. You will also see the popular ‘racós and barracas’, public spaces in the streets where people gather to eat, dance and enjoy the whole day.

Every day, at 14 hours, from the mythical Plaza de los Luceros, you can enjoy the ‘mascletà’, a unique pyrotechnic show. And on the 24th, at midnight, all the bonfires, those satirical monuments full of color, will burn in the ‘Nit de la Cremà’ (the night of fire).
